Suspension Tricks

From Trackmania Wiki

Suspension Tricks are techniques primarily found in the Snow environment (and occasionally others) in TrackMania United Forever. While similar behaviors can appear elsewhere, this page focuses on Snow due to how prevalent and impactful suspension tricks are on Snow tracks.

The Snow car is infamous for its extremely problematic hitbox. In particular, a small spherical hitbox located beneath the car is responsible for most landing issues. As a result, many landings (or even situations where the car has fewer than four wheels in contact with the ground) can cause the car to "bug," leading to a massive and often unavoidable loss of speed. This bug can occur from almost any height, and in some cases even with no visible drop at all, appearing to trigger inconsistently or seemingly at random.

In response to this behavior, players developed various techniques collectively referred to as suspension tricks in order to avoid triggering the landing bug.

Primary Suspension Trick[edit]

The most common form of suspension trick is used when jumping from a higher surface to a lower road or platform. The player performs alternating left and right steering inputs prior to the jump, rotating the car in such a way that only one to three wheels touch the ground first. This allows the wheels to make contact before the problematic lower hitbox collides with the surface.

While it is rare, landing perfectly flat on all four wheels can also result in a "good" landing. However, the most consistent outcome is achieved when one of the rear wheels (most often a single back wheel) makes contact first.

Side-Wheel Suspension Trick[edit]

A secondary variation of the suspension trick involves performing the same steering motion as the car leaves a ledge, but aiming to land with both wheels on either the left or right side of the car touching the ground first. This again prevents the lower hitbox from triggering the landing bug and allows the car to retain speed.

Other Variations[edit]

There are many other forms of suspension tricks (often informally referred to as sus-tricks), but they are significantly less common than the two primary methods described above and tend to be more situational.

Examples on Nadeo Tracks[edit]

Good examples of suspension tricks can be observed on official Nadeo tracks such as:

Modifications[edit]

In 2025, a mod was created that recreates the updated Snow car hitbox from Trackmania 2020 and imports it into TrackMania United Forever. This modification largely patches the landing bug by removing the problematic hitbox, significantly reducing the need for suspension tricks on Snow tracks.
