Ladder Points

From Trackmania Wiki

Ladder Points are a form of score achieved by playing on servers in TrackMania United Forever, TrackMania Nations Forever, and Maniaplanet. The maximum amount in the respective games is 100,000 in TMUF and 60,000 in TMNF (it is limited because of Freezone). In Maniaplanet, the amount varies per title pack. For the official title packs, the limits are the following:

Not to be confused with Skill Points.

Gaining Ladder Points or "LP" for short, is an interesting process. if a server is populated, and you finish in the top few players, you will typically gain more LP, this being increased by factors such as: not having as much LP as other players on the server, winning the race! As well as decreased by: having a lot of LP and finishing in a decent position amongst lower LP players, not finishing at all (yielding nothing), and finishing in a lower position in general.

A Common misconception with LP is that you aren't able to gain them on certain servers, this is true, however not for the reasons people think. If a player made server does not yield LP at the end of a match it is because the server is running a custom timer plugin, most of these use some sort of skip function when the round ends, rather than the timer organically running out (LP is not awarded when a map is skipped). The way to check if a normal in-game timer is present is if a sand-timer icon is visible next to the timer.

In Maniaplanet, the system was changed so that skipping a map does allow LP gain.

Ladder Points in the modern era of TMF and Maniaplanet are vastly useless unless you enjoy playing on specific servers with LP requirements, as private servers as easily made and can be made private for players and their friends. However, ladder points are used in Maniaplanet to give an echelon that gets displayed next to your name on the scoreboard when playing on a server. It's useless but can be used to brag.

Ladder Point Brackets[edit]

There are several LP brackets for servers and "rules" (though no longer enforced), which are officially outlined by Nadeo themselves, as well as the individual player rankings on the leaderboards. They are as follows.

  • 0-60000LP - Amateurs place (Good for newer players)
    • Typically Freezone Servers although not always
    • Public (if Freezone)
    • No minimum length required for tracks on said servers.
  • 20000-70000LP - Serious challengers (More Experienced Racers)
    • No lol tracks (Not Enforced)
    • Environment mixed tracks allowed (including surrounding area or car change, this then means Freezone players cannot join)
    • 20 players max (Servers do default to this when created under this bracket however in most configs this can be changed later
    • Tracks length being over 20 seconds long. (Not Enforced)
    • Public (Not Enforced)
  • 40000-80000LP Competitive Racers
    • No lol tracks (Not Enforced)
    • Environment mixed tracks allowed
    • Race or stunt tracks (Though not enforced little to no servers exist outside this bracket for Stunt)
    • 16 players max
    • Public, Validation seed, Referee (Referees were once commonplace however are no longer really needed)
    • Tracks length being over 30 seconds long. (Not Enforced)
  • 60000-90000LP Pro Racers
    • Rounds Mode
    • No lol tracks (Not Enforced)
    • Environment mixed tracks allowed
    • "Big competitions" tracks (Meaning "comp" style tracks Tech,Fullspeed, etc)
    • 12 players max
    • 8 Spectators (both this and the player limit for this bracket are still mostly complied with to this day)
    • Public, Validation seed, Referee
    • Tracks length being over 45 Seconds long
  • 80000-100000 Race of Champions (Extremely Rare)
    • Approved by Nadeo (for this reason getting to this level of LP and making your own server for this regardless of needing Nadeo or not is very difficult)
    • Rounds mode, 4 minimum
    • No lol tracks, no environment mixed tracks
    • "Big competitions" tracks approved by Nadeo (Though now this is normally just the server owner)
    • 8 players max
    • 16 spectators places (Both this and player count are only enforced in TMF currently)
    • Open Sundays from 15 GMT to 18 GMT (Only enforced in TMF)
    • Public, Validation seed, Referee (Currently there is only 1 known referee remaining)
    • Tracks length over 45 seconds
    • Compulsory rotation of players (every round bottom 2-3 players are moved to spectator if more than 8 people present)
    • For united servers: tracks from 3 environments at least and less than 40 % tracks from the same environment
    • Tracks number less than or equal to 14
    • No guestlist (This is now a pointless requirement)

Race of Champions[edit]

as prior mentioned Race of Champions (RoC) is the only way of acquiring more than the limit of 100k Ladder Points and is only possible during the racing period of RoC, being only 3 hours. The way going over 100k LP works; is you can gain as much over 100k as possible in that time, but once its over, a calculation is done from the person the furthest over 100k LP downwards. adjusting 1st to be exactly 100k, and everyone else above to be incrementally below.

Ladder Point Decay[edit]

This only happens above 60k LP and even faster above 80-90k LP, if you are not actively playing on server to gain any LP, you will progressively lose LP down to a certain amount each week or so.

Trivia[edit]

  • In TMF, approximately rank 111,980 is the most common Ladder Rank in the game among active users, as it is the rank of almost exactly 60,000 LP which is where the vast majority of players occupy.
  • Rounds Mode typically gives more LP the longer the track and the higher the score limit. Events like A6MC can net a newer player over 1,000 LP sometimes depending on placement.
  • There is an exploit in Maniaplanet to allow players on a server to gain much more ladder points than they would normally, and to even gain ladder points when no other players on the server.
  • Sometimes there has been rare occasions where nobody has 100k LP due to LP decay and inactivity, this however is incredibly rare.
  • As of 2025-01-25 There are only 3 Race of Champions Servers left in TMF.
  • Millions of players have achieved at least 100LP in TrackMania Forever's lifespan, with over 100k players having 60k LP
