TASmania is a recurring monthly community competition focused on Tool-Assisted Speedrunning (TAS) in TrackMania Nations Forever. Founded by players LittleD3m0 and Lukalyc, the event challenges participants to create the fastest possible run for a specific track within a limited timeframe.

History

The competition was established around mid-2023, with the goal of shining light on a niche but highly technical subset of the game's player base. The event's name is a pun, combining both TAS and Trackmania.

The competition has grown steadily, reaching its 26th edition by January 26. It serves as a training ground for new TASers and a showcase of game-breaking mechanics for more experienced TASers.

Format and Rules

Each edition of TASmania follows a similar structure:

  • Duration: Participants are given a two-week window to work on the selected (and often custom-built) map.
  • Objective: The goal is to produce the fastest valid replay file for the announced track.
  • Tools: Participants must use TMInterface, which allows for inputs to be scripted, edited, and validated.
  • Tie-Breaker: In the event of a tie on the in-game timer (which displays to the hundredth), the winner is determined by the precise finish time.

Media and Community

The central hub for the competition is its Discord server, with the main event hosting (map reveal, submissions, results) happening on TMTAS Exchange.

After each competition, a results video is produced and uploaded to the official TASmania YouTube channel. These videos, often edited by community members such as Skycrafter, Qwerter or Alauahio, showcase every run starting from slowest.

Notable Editions

  • TASmania #12 and TASmania #25 (MGTC Collaborations): This edition was held in collaboration with the Multi-Game TAS Competition (MGTC), an event that brings together TAS communities from various video games to compete in cross-disciplinary challenges.
