The Monthly Track Contest (MTC) is a highly anticipated event in the TrackMania community, where mappers face off in a month-long challenge to create unique and innovative tracks based on a set theme. Hosted on ManiaExchange, the MTC has been running for many years and is considered one of the most engaging competitions for both creators and players.
History and Evolution
The MTC began as a small, community-driven event on TMX, with the goal of encouraging creativity and fun challenges in track building. Over the years, it has evolved into a well-established competition, attracting both new and experienced mappers from around the world. The contest's themes have varied widely, from artistic constraints to technical challenges, pushing the limits of what is possible within TrackMania’s game mechanics. Early themes focused on simplicity and creating tracks with limited resources, while later editions introduced complex design restrictions like specific block types, track length, or requiring the use of custom themes.
In recent years, the MTC has gained increased prominence, becoming a staple event for the TrackMania community. It serves as a platform for both amateur and seasoned mappers to showcase their skills and creativity, while also fostering community engagement through voting, feedback, and discussions.
Rules and Participation
The rules for the MTC are relatively straightforward, though each month the specific constraints and requirements vary based on the theme. However, some core guidelines remain constant:
- Map creation period: Tracks must be created and submitted within the active contest month.
- Naming convention: All tracks must include "MTC" in the title to signify their participation in the contest.
- Theme adherence: Maps must follow the specific theme set for that month, whether it’s related to track design, aesthetics, or gameplay mechanics.
Additional rules may include restrictions on block types, use of specific in-game mechanics, or constraints on map length and complexity. Each contest is designed to encourage participants to think outside the box while working within these boundaries.
Voting and Judging
TMNF-TMUF
After the submission period ends, the community plays and the judges vote on the tracks. Judges are encouraged to provide constructive feedback, rating maps based on creativity, difficulty, and adherence to the theme.
TM2020
For judging, there will be a public voting system. A server will be opened for about a week that anyone can play the MTC maps on. Anyone can vote by using the server's karma system.
After the results are announced, the winning tracks are showcased on the given TMX homepage.
Prizes and Recognition
The primary reward for winning the MTC is community recognition and the ability to showcase a given map on the homepage on the given TMX site.

Scoring System
The Scoring system for MTC has changed a couple of times, with minor updates to what each scoring category is based on. It used to be out of 10 points from each judge as a generic score (some judges did use decimal numbers on occasion)
It then became out of 30 points for each judge, between three categories: Creativity, Fun and Overall Looks (10 points each), this update came in December of 2023,
The next update to the scoring system came in January of 2025, raising the Scoring limit per judge to 50, to further avoid ties and make score averages less likely to be whole numbers. The Categories then became:

- Fun Factor (5)
- Design (10)
- Theme (5)
- Creativity (10)
Miscellaneous
There was at one stage an official MTC Betting Pool, this was short lived, and disappeared around 2012, but was simply a place for people to bet the in-game currency coppers on Monthly Track Contest Participants.
