Speed sliding on dirt, grass and plastic generally works when in the 4th [[gear]] (~235km/h) or above. Speedslides, also known as speeddrifts or sd for short, is a technique done to gain speed, commonly used in Fullspeed maps.

To successfully perform a speedslide, the player must:

  1. have a speed of at least 400km/h.
  2. Then, initiate a slide and steer at a specific angle, either by tapping the key or by holding the required angle.
    • Slides are initiated automatically when steering at speeds above ~598km/h on the Road surface on flat ground. (This is known as an autoslide.) At higher speeds, less sharp steering, or a shorter time spent steering, is needed before an autoslide occurs. Elevation changes/slopes can also cause autoslides; the flat to slope platform block is a commonly used block to autoslide for a speedslide.
    • Braking to initiate the speedslide is often referred to as an s4d. The acronym means that you press the brake (s) key for (4) a drift (d).

The skid marks can be used as a useful visual cue, especially when still learning how to speedslide effectively. Image representation of optimal skid marks overlap relative to speed, on tarmac:

Slippery Surfaces[edit]

On slippery surfaces, slides can be initiated and held much more easily; thus, speed slides are also generally easier to perform successfully (though not necessarily optimally).

Speed sliding on dirt, grass and plastic works at speeds of 200km/h or above. The angle of sliding should be much lower than on road for these surfaces for maximal speed gain, meaning more gentle steering or more infrequent and lighter tapping. Wiggling also allows the player to speedslide in a straight line; the best wiggle rhythm depends on speed, surface and the player’s own style of steering (e.g. light steer taps vs full steer but with very quick alternating of direction). Wiggles are possible to perform on any surface except ice when the car autoslides, which happens when you pass a certain speed threshold.

In Trackmania 2020 there is ice, which has almost zero grip. In order to "speedslide" on ice, you need to Iceslide at a specific angle in order to gain maximum acceleration speed.
