Nadeo, officially known as Ubisoft Nadeo, is a French video game development studio best known for creating the Trackmania series. Founded in the year 2000, Nadeo initially focused on developing simulation-style games before becoming a highly regarded developer of arcade racing games.
History[edit]
Nadeo was founded in 2000 by Florent Castelnérac and Hylis. The studio’s first major release was Virtual Skipper (2000), a sailing simulation game developed in collaboration with real-world sailing competitions. While Virtual Skipper was not related to Trackmania, it established Nadeo’s reputation for physics-driven gameplay and competitive time-based challenges.
In 2003, Nadeo released TrackMania, often referred to as TrackMania Original. Unlike traditional racing games, TrackMania focused on time trials, instant respawns, and user-created tracks. This release solidified the studio’s identity and established the design principles that would define Nadeo’s later work.
Trackmania Franchise[edit]
Following the success of the original TrackMania, Nadeo continued to expand the franchise with multiple titles and environments, including:
- TrackMania Sunrise
- TrackMania Nations ESWC
- TrackMania United
- TrackMania United Forever
- TrackMania Nations Forever
- TrackMania² (Stadium, Canyon, Valley, Lagoon)
- Trackmania Turbo
- Trackmania 2020
A defining feature of the Trackmania series is its strong emphasis on community content. Nadeo provided powerful in-game editors that allowed players to create tracks, modes, and media, leading to large third-party platforms such as Trackmania Exchange and competitive communities centered around World Record hunting, TASing, and esports.
Acquisition by Ubisoft[edit]
In 2009, Nadeo was acquired by Ubisoft, becoming Ubisoft Nadeo. This acquisition provided the studio with greater resources and global reach, while allowing it to retain creative control over the Trackmania franchise. Under Ubisoft, Nadeo continued to develop new Trackmania titles and modernize the series, culminating in the live-service reboot Trackmania.
Legacy[edit]
Today, TrackMania is widely regarded as a prominent series within the competitive arcade racing space.[1][2] The TrackMania series remains active more than two decades after its debut, supported by a dedicated player base, ongoing developer updates, and a rich competitive scene spanning casual play, esports, and tool-assisted experimentation.
Nadeo’s work on Trackmania has had a lasting impact on time trial racing games and continues to shape how player creativity and competition coexist within a single game ecosystem.
